Social Responsibility Committee

Our Mission Statement:
The mission of the Social Responsibility Committee is to engage in social action and community outreach, integrating social justice work into the overall life of the congregation and producing a significant impact on targeted social justice issues at local, national, and international levels.

Our Current Ongoing Projects
Beacon House windowBeacon House - Serving families and pregnant women who are temporarily homeless or at risk of homelessness by providing resources for emergency assistance, stabilization, and prevention.  Sign up in the Social Hall or contact John Strei (jstrei62@gmail.comt).

Cathy & JennaCommunity Table - Since 1993, The Community Table has been nourishing hungry bodies and spirits in the Eau Claire Community. Currently, The Community Table serves one meal each day, 365 days a year on a no-questions asked basis. Anyone can join our table during meal time.   UUC sponsors a volunteer team 4-6 times per year.  We prepare and serve a meal, and clean up afterwards.  Sign up in the Social Hall or contact Kathy O’Leary (oleary6@charter.net).

JONAH – Joining Our Neighbors, Advancing Hope: People of Faith Gathered for the Common Good.  JONAH is an organization uniting congregations to build a better community.  In our increasingly fragmented society, we join hands with others to bring effective change rather than isolated self interest.  Our UUC Team Leaders are Alta Bragg (altabra71@yahoo.com), Mark Quam (mrquam@charter.net), and Julie Lepp (juliannelepp@yahoo.com).

Equal Exchange - Equal Exchange has created Big Change for over 25 years. It all started with an idea: what if food could be traded in a way that is honest and fair, a way that empowers both farmers and consumers?  UUC sells Equal Exchange coffee, tea, chocolate, almonds olive oil and geobars in the Social Hall.  You can get great coffee, and support fairly traded, organic goods.  All proceeds from the UUC Coffee Table benefit Camp Oasis!

Camp OasisCamp OasisCamp Oasis is a secure home and school that will be a safe haven for 40 girls who were orphaned after the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti.  All profits from our Equal Exchange sales table go straight to Camp Oasis.  Check out the You Tube Video on Camp Oasis

Guest at Your Table – Guest at Your Table is an annual tradition in which congregation members learn about people with whom UUSC is working. This year, we are featuring some of our particularly innovative partnerships. These people are your guests, and you are asked to share your blessings with them to support our shared mission.  By celebrating Guest at Your Table in your congregation, you are helping nurture a spirit of gratitude and "justice, equity, and compassion in human relations." Guest at Your Table fosters understanding and awareness of UUSC's human-rights work.

AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin – (ARCW)  The AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin is among the largest and most comprehensive AIDS service agencies in the country. We provide comprehensive health care services and a vast array of social services to more than 2,600 Wisconsin residents living with HIV disease.

Plymouth Homeless Ministry – The Plymouth Homeless Ministry is based out of the Plymouth United Church of Christ in Eau Claire.  Some of their members visit the homeless in the Chippewa Valley, and provide food, clothing, or whatever else is needed.  UUC has done donation drives, and made blankets for the homeless in the area.

Chippewa Valley Free Clinic – To provide health care to and advocacy for the people of the Chippewa Valley who have no health care alternatives.

Unitarian Universalist Service Committee The UUSC is a nonsectarian organization that advances human rights and social justice in the United States and around the world.
